one of the world’s premier scholars of Ḥadīth, was born in Mau, U.P., India in c. 1930 and received his education successively at Dār al-ʿUlūm Deoband, India (1952), al-Azhar University, Cairo (M.A., 1955), and the University of Cambridge (Ph.D., 1966). He was one of the pioneers of using digital computers for hadith studies, a task he undertook in 1978 and which continued intermittently for the next two decades. Al-Aʿẓamī served as Professor Emeritus at King Saʿūd University (Riyadh), where he also chaired the department of Islamic Studies. He also served as curator of the National Public Library, Qaṭar; Associate Professor at Umm al-Qurā University (Makkah); Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA); Visiting Fellow at St. Cross College (University of Oxford); King Faiṣal Visiting Professor for Islamic Studies at Princeton, USA; and Visiting Scholar at the University of Colorado (Boulder, USA). He also held an Honorary Professorship at the University of Wales (Lampeter). In 1980 he was the recipient of the prestigious King Faiṣal International Award for Islamic Studies. Al-Aʿẓamī’s publications include Studies in Early Ḥadīth Literature, Ḥadīth Methodology and Literature, On Schacht’s Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence, History of the Qurʾānic Text, Scribes of Prophet Muḥammad,  Dirāsat fī al-Ḥadīth an-Nabawī, Kuttāb an-Nabī, Manhaj an-Naqd ʿind al-Muḥaddithīn, and al-Muḥaddithūn min al-Yamāmah. Among his edited works are al-ʿIlal of Ibn al-Madīnī, Kitāb at-Tamyīz of Imām Muslim, Maghāzī Rasūlullāh of ʿUrwah ibn az-Zubayr, Muwaṭṭaʾ Imām Mālik, Ṣaḥīḥ ibn Khuzaimah, and Sunan ibn Mājah; which was the first Islamic publication to contain computer-generated indices in Arabic. He also prepared and presented the facsimile of a manuscript of Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī preserved in Istanbul and dated 725AH, printed under the title: Kitāb Al-Jāmiʿ Aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥ. His last and final work was Ageless Qurʾān Timeless Text – a visual study of Sura 17 across 14 centuries and 19 manuscripts. Many of his works have been translated into various languages, and many have entered university syllabuses. He passed away on the 20th of December 2017. Al-Aʿẓamī donated his massive personal library and many unfinished works to Ibn Haldun University, Istanbul, where it will be housed in a complex next to the Süleymaniye Mosque.
